I have been thinking about getting my Master's degree for quite some time now, but after a recent meeting with my principal I was reminded of the idea I had pushed to the back of my brain :) My principal is SO great and told me that I needed to start thinking about what was "next". Quite frankly, I don't really know, but I know that simply being an elementary classroom teacher is probably not for me, forever. I have always wanted to go to Butler since we moved to Indy...the campus reminds me a lot of EIU, where I went, and is on a smaller scale, which I appreciate! They have some great Graduate Programs to choose from for an education major, BUT now the dilemma is which to choose.
Here are my options...
- Master of Science in Education: Educational Administration
- Master of Science in Education: Effective Teaching and Leadership
- Master of Science in School Counseling
Another great point my Principal made was that I should choose a Master's in something completely different, as she was a teacher and got her degree in Administration to go on to be a principal. I always thought my heart was in being a principal/assistant principal, therefore leading me to choose the first option of Educational Admin., but these days I'm not so sure. I love the classroom too much and don't know how I feel about managing people in a school and not getting to feel the excitement of helping children learn, directly, each day. The second option, Effective Teaching and Leadership, sounds right up my alley, but it doesn't really provide a DIFFERENT career for me, just amping up what I already bring to the table as a teacher. And lastly, something I really never considered, was a degree in School Counseling. I am really leaning most toward this one, because it is SO different than what I do now and could be taken in many directions. This might be a career change I would like to do someday when I'm too tired to be chasing around Kindergartners all day :) I can also see using this degree in Ministry or at a collegiate level as well, as an advisor. Oh the options are endless! Thoughts?
I am ALSO looking into scholarships, because I refuse to pay for my Master's degree. I was SO blessed to be given a college degree free of charge (not so free to my Pa, sorry!) and don't want to incur any debt on another degree. I'm supposed to start making more money, not owing more. Good news is that there are several scholarships available and I am in contact with the lady in charge of getting that together.
We'll see what happens next! I need to really wrap my head around my options for now...
