Big Change?

Well, I have come to a recent pondering in my thoughts and wanted to share. My new assistant at school and I were having a convo about her daughter having Celiacs disease (basically you can't eat gluten and a whole slew of other things). She was telling me all of the troubles her daughter had and that she was also lactose intolerant and an asthmatic. I was like oh...I'm lactose intolerant and I have asthma too (I think this was when the wheels began to turn in my head). Usually the three are known to go hand-in-hand...my college roommate also had Celiacs, and she too had lactose/asthma combo. All of the sudden it kind of all made sense. Usually every time after I eat a meal, I either feel full for 15 minutes and then am suddenly hungry again or feel pretty icky (symptoms of Celiacs). Nothing I regularly complain about-because it's so normal to me. I also thought back to when I was younger, my allergy tests showed that I had an allergy to wheat. We never thought anything of it because I ate lots of things with wheat in them, and never seemed to break out in hives or had my throat close up, etc. Another thing adding into the mix was the fact that ever since last year or more, I've been having a bloated feeling in my abdomen and just an overall funny feeling and wasn't sure what was causing it. I went to the "womanly doctor" and had it checked out (such a great time, right ladies?) and nothing was found even after several ultra sounds. It still persisted, so I went back and asked for a blood test, and still nothing detected. One of the symptoms of Celiacs is abdominal discomfort and bloating-DING DING DING! This would explain it. So while I will be rather disheartened if I actually do have any form of Celiacs, I would be relieved to know why I feel the ways I do. I'm also not trying to be one of those people who reads things on the internet and jumps to conclusions (Mom...ha), but I think it all makes sense. SO, in any event, as an experiment I'm going to try to go relatively "gluten free" for a week and see how I feel. Lucky for me, there's a Wild Oats basically next door with a HUGE selection of gluten free items. So, I'll keep you all posted on my gluten-free journey which starts Monday. (I'll be thinking of you Noel as I have to take all of my favorite things out of my diet...I hope peanut butter isn't one of them!)

Sounds like I could be a possible candidate too. :) Good luck!

good luck, might not be a bad idea to see an allergist for a test. we just heard of a girl in UK died of using aquafresh toothpaste - which contains peanut oil. so scary

Best of luck with your experiment! I think it sounds like a great idea to try out for a little while to see if you can feel better. Make sure you back up your findings with a trip to the Dr.

That is what we thought possibly Magster had last yr. w/ all her tummy aches. We did see an allergist and confirmed she was NOT allergic to wheat, which is completely different that celiac. The tummy aches had stops when we stopped the wheat/gluten products so I thought we had solved the case. The Doc said we had to reintoduce the products in order to do proper testing. After following that instuction the tummy aches were still absent. Go figure! The tummy aches stayed gone for months ~ but believe it or not have started again in the last 2 weeks. Maybe Maggie is allergic to winter.

it doesn't matter, you can give her my name if you want, but i don't know how available i'll be on a last-minute basis. so it's not that i dont WANT to, i would just tell her not to put me high on the call list, if that makes sense.
